Carlow University Receives $1 Million Commitment for Endowment from Hillman Foundation
New Interdisciplinary Center Will Be Established and Named for Sister Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, Ph.D.
Pittsburgh, PA-Pittsburgh philanthropist Henry Hillman today announced that the Hillman Foundation has committed $1 million to Carlow University's endowment. Both he and his wife, Elsie Hillman, who is a Trustee Emeritus at Carlow, attended the May 4 public tribute in Oakland honoring Carlow's outgoing president, Sister Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, Ph.D. During the afternoon program, Mr. Hillman presented the contribution to Dr. Judith Davenport, Chair of Carlow University's Board of Trustees, in honor of Sister Grace Ann.
Carlow University will use the $1 million commitment to support a new interdisciplinary institute that complements both the Mercy mission and Sister Grace Ann Geibel's lifelong commitment to justice and social responsibility.
Dr. Davenport said, "The endowment established by this generous grant will be used to support the programs and activities of the Grace Ann Geibel Institute for Justice and Social Responsibility. Naming the institute in Sister Grace Ann's honor is a fitting tribute to her-recognizing her years of commitment to the university and ensuring that her work to promote a more just society will continue and have the opportunity to grow."
The university will name the endowment the Elsie Hilliard Hillman Endowment for the Grace Ann Geibel Institute for Justice and Social Responsibility. Sister Grace Ann and Mrs. Hillman have had such a special friendship over the years working on many endeavors to advance the university," added Dr. Davenport.
Carlow's new institute will address social, economic, and political issues relative to a just society. Through community-based research, education, and community outreach/collaborations, the institute will promote a supportive arena for critical analysis and research about:
* The nature and extent of social, economic, and political injustice and exclusion; * The institutionalization of social, economic, and political injustice and exclusion; * Democracy, political participation, and empowerment; * Developing collaborative and broad-based participatory strategies in research, education, and community action to enhance social, economic, and political justice.
