CARLOW COLLEGE TO UNVEIL NEW GREENSBURG EDUCATION CENTER AT RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY ON TUESDAY, OCT. 8

PITTSBURGH, PA... In a move that reflects larger plans to achieve university status by 2005, Carlow College will expand its programs by unveiling its first stand-alone, off-campus educational site in Greensburg, The Greensburg Education Center, at a grand opening celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. by Carlow College President Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, as well as Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce officials.

Expanding its programs beyond the Oakland campus is just one part of the college's strategic plan that is currently in its implementation phase which includes a concentration on a new student center, a new lifelong wellness initiative and a new commitment to regional alliances.

"Carlow College has always been a leader in education by reaching out to students wherever they are and providing them with academic excellence and convenience," said President Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM. "Carlow College was a pioneer in adult education in the 1970s, and we are still a leader in community education with the Hill College. This Greensburg facility provides state-of-the-art education with computer labs and student conveniences and gives us prominence in this very significant location."

Construction of the new 6,000 sq. foot facility in Greensburg, located on Route 136, took four months to complete. The building, for which Carlow College entered into a long-term lease agreement with building owner Henry Holding Company, includes two classrooms, a computer lab/classroom, student lounge, large seminar room as well as a board room.

In the past, Carlow College rented space in the Professional Building in downtown Greensburg for its students who were all from the nursing division. This academic year, with the new facility, Carlow College will be able to expand its offerings in Greensburg to include (in addition to the nursing program) undergraduate programs in business management, early childhood education, human resource management, and information systems management as well as graduate degree programs in professional leadership, nursing leadership (three tracks), and a master's in management and technology.

Currently, at the Greensburg site there are a total of 65 students, 55 are undergraduate and 10 graduate. Of the 55 undergraduates, all but five are nursing majors and all ten of the graduate students are in the nursing master's program. The nursing division began to offer courses in an accelerated format in Greensburg in the early 1990s because of a demand for nursing education programs in Westmoreland County.

In addition to the new facility in Greensburg, Carlow College has existing educational sites in Beaver and Cranberry. The Beaver site is on the campus of the Beaver Medical Center, and the Cranberry site is located in the Cranberry Professional Park.
