Tommy Sands to Come to Carlow as Part of His "Arising From the Troubles" Tour

The lecture and concert tour comes to Carlow March 13, 2013

Pittsburgh, Pa. Tommy Sands, one of Ireland's most powerful songwriters and solo performers, will visit Carlow University on March 13, 2013.

Sands is a singer, songwriter, and social activist from Northern Ireland who tries to encourage peace in his native country and throughout the world through music.

"Tommy Sands is one of the most important songwriters in Ireland if not the rest of the world," Sing Out! magazine said.

His "Arising from the Troubles" tour includes both a lecture and a concert. The lecture will be at 4 p.m. in 107 A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, and his concert will be at 7 p.m. in Kresge Theater, located on the fifth floor of Grace Library.

"Arising from the Troubles" is also the name of the CD that Sands will mainly be playing songs from. "This collection provides a soundtrack for days of darkness, days of hope, days of weary peace: soul songs telling our troubled story with a deft eye for exact detail and pitch-perfect appreciation of political nuance," described by Eamonn McCann on the CD sleeve.

In addition to his songs, he will also tell stories of his first-hand experiences in this "sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful" time in Northern Ireland.

You can learn more about Sands and his tour at www.tommysands.com.

Both the lecture and concert are invitation only to the Carlow community and Carlow's Irish community partners. For more information on the event, contact Mary Onufer at mlonufer@carlow.edu or (412) 578-6138.
