More Than 60 Carlow University Students Spend Spring Break Helping Others

Carlow Students Help in Texas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Costa Rica, and Locally

Pittsburgh, Pa. Carlow University students will be on Spring Break beginning Monday, March 4, but more than 60 of them will forego rest and relaxation and spend their break serving others in Laredo, Texas; Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Anthony, New Mexico; Costa Rica, and in Pittsburgh.

"Each year we add more students to the numbers who participate in our Alternative Spring Break (ASB) experience," said Jermaine McKinley, DMin, the coordinator of the Mercy Center for Service at Carlow University. "I call this character-in-action. It may look like were only hammering nails or painting walls, but I ask the students to keep in mind the impact our presence is having on the people and the agencies that we are there to assist."

The breakdown of Carlow students in each place during the week of March 4 through March 9 is as follows:

" 24 students will travel to Laredo, Texas to work for Habitat for Humanity building houses.
" 18 students will go Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to work for Habitat for Humanity building houses in an area that had not fully recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, but suffered additional damage due to tornados a few weeks ago.
" Seven students will be in Anthony, New Mexico to work in the Women's Intercultural Center, a center that was started by the Sisters of Mercy near the U.S.-Mexico border. The students will be painting and working with the food and clothing bank projects, as well as learning about the culture on both sides of the border.
" Eight students will be traveling to Costa Rica where they will build handicap ramps at a school while studying environmental issues and being immersed in the culture of a Latin American country.
" Approximately five students will be spending their spring break working at agencies in the Pittsburgh area. The locations vary depending on the student's interest, but the American Cancer Society and a Morningside senior citizen facility are two of the locations getting assistance from Carlow students.

Twitter users can keep up with the work being done during Carlow's Alternative Spring Break experience (March 4 through March 9) at the following hashtags:

Texas = #CarlowASBTX
Mississippi = #CarlowASBMS
New Mexico = #CarlowASBNM
Costa Rica= #CarlowASBCR

"Carlow has a long history of service," said McKinley. "The Sisters of Mercy founded our University on a tradition of service to create a more merciful and compassionate world. Our students' and faculty's continued participation in ASB reflects some of Carlow's core values: discovery, leadership, service, and student progress."
