| Speak Up Against Gender Violence Aims to Teach Valuable Strategies |
| |
The program will take place Monday, February 18, 2013
Pittsburgh, Pa. If someone needed help, would you know how? Carlow University's Speak Up Against Gender Violence is a program aimed at making the answer to that question yes for all who attend.
"We need to speak up against gender violence and help those around us know that they can speak up too," said Irene Lietz, facilitator of Dionne's Project for Safe Relationships. "We at Carlow are a culture that objects to gender violence and we put that into action."
The event will be held on Monday, February 18, 2013, in the atrium of the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology beginning at 4 p.m. There will be light refreshments and a free t-shirt for all participants.
Presented in association with Speak Up Week by Dionne's Project for Safe Relationships, LGBT & Allies, and the Carlow chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). This program's keynote address is "Bystander Intervention Strategies Why and How."
After the keynote, there will be four breakout sessions. " Intervention Part II A hands-on, interactive session in which Pittsburgh Action Against Rape educators and our keynoters, will show participants how easy it is to intervene safely in social situations that might otherwise prove uncomfortable, compromising, or dangerous
" Interrupting Hurtful Language A practical but sensitive presentation and discussion, led by Carlow's LGBT and Allies group, about loaded, potentially damaging word choices and how we can intervene to minimize and/or prevent pain to others.
" Bystander Empathy Carlow Counseling Services will examine the cultural messages and forces, particularly in the media, that desensitize us and distort our views of appropriate gendered behavior, leading us to be hesitant or unwilling to object or intervene on behalf of victims of gender violence. They will also consider what we can do in response.
" Social Technology A facilitated discussion of a recent NPR story about cyber-bullying and shaming, our own perceptions and experiences of this phenomenon, and what we can do about it.
Admission to the event is free and Carlow urges the public to bring friends, co-workers, classmates, family, and anyone else who is important to you.
