| Carlow University Hosts Homewood Artist Vanessa German for Black History Month |
| |
Her "Love Front Porch" keeps kids off the tough streets of Homewood
Pittsburgh, Pa. Vanessa German invites kids to her porch in Homewood to do artwork, and now Carlow University has invited her to speak on its porch or stage, that is.
German, who was born in Wisconsin and raised in California before moving to Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood, will be speaking in celebration of Black History Month on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 beginning at 4 p.m. in Kresge Theatre, located on the fifth floor of Grace Library on the Carlow campus.
German is not shy about professing her love for Homewood, a neighborhood that only seems to get media attention for violence
"Yes, there is violence," German writes on her website. "I could break your heart with stories of my friends whose sons have been shot and killed, shot and wounded, or shot and in prison. But, I love Homewood. Ive never loved a place before. To me, Homewood is one of the most inspiring places in the world."
Her program "Love Front Porch" welcomes kids from the neighborhood onto her porch to create various works of art. Since its humble beginnings, where kids asked what she was doing and if they could join, German has continually welcomed more and more kids to her porch.
With the increasing amount of interested kids, German is setting up an "art house" just one door down from her famous porch. She's been raising money on her website, www.lovefrontporch.com, in order to provide the students with all of the necessities.
She's a talented artist for the children of Homewood to look up to. German, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' 2012 Emerging Artist of the Year, is a nationally recognized performance poet, and her sculptures have been on display at The Andy Warhol Museum.
German's appearance at Carlow is sponsored jointly by the University's Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Women's Studies Program.
