| Carlow University Helps Students Harness the Power of Public Speech |

Speak Up Week Will Be Celebrated February 18-21
Pittsburgh, Pa. Carlow University students will celebrate free speech during Speak Up Week, February 18-21, 2013. Sponsored by the Dr. Tom Hopkins Communication Laboratory, the week includes a number of events to encourage members of the Carlow community to speak out and share their perspectives on issues that matter most to them.
"Speech is incredibly powerful," said Rachel Furman, director of the Dr. Tom Hopkins Communication Laboratory. "Just speaking up about important issues can help change our lives and the lives that matter most to us. With Speak Up Week, we wanted to provide a weeklong focus on public speech and show just how powerful it can be. We want to give all members of the Carlow community an opportunity to share perspectives on the issues that matter to them on a local, regional, or global level."
With 11 events in total, Speak Up Week provides students, faculty, and staff multiple opportunities to enhance the power of their speech. "We're integrating public speaking opportunities into daily activities on campus and planning several special events," said Furman.
Monday, February 18 " A student speaking contest kicks off Speak Up Week as participants from the introductory public speaking course will give 4-5 minute speeches. From noon 1:30 p.m. in Kresge Theater. " The dessert open house will be held from 2 p.m. 4 p.m. in the Dr. Tom Hopkins Communication Lab. " The Bystander Awareness Forum focusing on Patient Advocacy is from 4 p.m. 6 p.m. Dionne's Project for Safe Relationships and the School of Nursing team up to present this event in A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology's atrium.
Tuesday. February 19: " The Identity Committee will present "Living the Core Values." The event lasts from noon until 2 p.m. in the Commuter Lounge in Frances Warde Hall. " Speak Up Week's first guest speaker, Elsie Hillman, comes to Kresge Theater from 4 p.m. 6 p.m. Hillman, a notable Western Pennsylvanian philanthropist and contributor to the Republican Party, will be having a conversation with Ellie Wymard, a Carlow professor and the director of the Master of Fine Arts program.
Wednesday, February 20: " Tiernan Cafeteria will host impromptu student speeches from noon 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the best student speeches. " From 4 p.m. 6 p.m. Vanessa German will take the stage in Kresge Theater. German is a Pittsburgh artist who resides in the neighborhood of Homewood. Her program, love front porch, invites kids to her porch to do artwork. Germans work has kept kids off the rough streets of Homewood and on her porch.
Thursday, February 21: " From noon 2 p.m. will be the "This I Believe" speech showcase presented by Carlow students in A.J. Palumbo Hall's atrium. " Women in Communication hosts a social media workshop from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. in Kresge Theater.
