School of Education Sponsors June 21 Conference for Women Educators
Pittsburgh, Pa. - The School of Education at Carlow University is sponsoring a conference for women in educational leadership on Thursday, June 21, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, located on the corner of Fifth and Craft avenues in Oakland. The theme for this year's conference is "Creating Caring Communities."
"The conference will provide a regional forum through which to share current knowledge of educational policy and leadership in general, and knowledge of women's leadership in particular," said Judith Touré, EdD, assistant professor and director of the master's program in educational leadership at Carlow. "Our goal is to bring together women who study and practice educational leadership, along with teacher leaders who aspire to leadership roles. We hope the discourse will focus leaders on ways to create caring school communities that foster learning for students and teachers."
The keynote speaker for the conference will be Malcolm Thomas from ONE Nation Education and Leadership Training. He also serves as prevention/intervention specialist through Mercy Behavioral Health and The Pittsburgh Board of Education Student Assistance Program (SAP) Program. Thomas is an inspirational speaker who will share stories of his successful work with youth who have been traditionally marginalized in school contexts.
The keynote is scheduled to last from 9 until 10 a.m., and is followed by panel sessions from 10:15 through 11:30 am. There will be additional sessions after lunch.
The morning sessions are:
The Arts and Social Justice Education Presenter IAsia Heather Thomas. IAsia Heather Thomas is a native of Cape Town, South Africa and currently serves Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) as project manager for the Culturally Responsive Arts Education Program. Her life's work is centered on serving children, youth, and families. She lives in Pittsburgh with her husband and children.
Communities of Practice in Education: Focusing on the Learner, Engaging the Future Presenter Patricia McMahon, PhD, associate dean of Curriculum-Centered Strategic Planning, Carlow University. Dr. McMahon has an extensive background in content area literacy instruction, as well as research methodology. She is a professor of teacher education at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The Principal at the Center: Creating a Caring Learning Community for Students & Teachers Presenter Monica Lamar, EdD, principal, Pittsburgh Dilworth. Dr. Lamar has served as a principal for 11 years, and has been a dedicated employee of PPS for 14 years. She received her BS in Education from Slippery Rock University and MS in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. In 2009, she received her Doctorate in Education from Duquesne University School of Education's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program for Education Leaders (IDPEL). Her dissertation is titled, "A School for Our Children: A School Successfully Closing the Student Achievement Gap." Additionally, Dr. Lamar was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Duquesne University Barbara L. Jackson Scholar Network, sponsored by the University Council of Education Administration (UCEA) to encourage African American student completion of the dissertation and matriculation into the professoriate. Her research interests include K-12 Leadership and Theory, Education Policy and Critical Race Theory.
Beginning at 1:00 pm, the afternoon sessions consist of: Young People and the Digital World: Partners in Learning Presenter - Justine Cassell, PhD, director, Human Computer Interaction Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Cassell has served on the faculty at Northwestern University and MIT. She received the Edgerton Prize at MIT, is an ACM and Computing Research Association Distinguished Lecturer, was honored in 2008 with the "Women of Vision" award from the Anita Borg Institute, and in 2011 was named to the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Robotics and Smart Devices. She spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos this past January on the promises and perils of online learning. One strand of her research explores the thorny issue of building culturally authentic virtual peers to scaffold the learning of Standard American English by children who come to school speaking other dialects.
The Arts and Social Justice Education will repeat in the afternoon.
The afternoon will also feature a dessert reception panel discussion that connects the sessions to the practice of instructional leadership.
