Carlow University's Youth Media Advocacy Project Holds Orientation for High School Youth Reporters

Students Will Be Trained to Cover "One Young World" Summit in Pittsburgh This October

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Forty area high school students and their parents will attend an orientation session at Carlow University on Tuesday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m. to prepare them to be youth reporters during the "One Young World" international youth summit which will be held in Pittsburgh this October.

Pittsburgh will be the host of the 2012 One Young World, which will attract more than 1,500 participants from 180 countries around the world to discuss the most pressing global issues. It was launched in London in 2010 and that year more than 800 delegates attended. Last year, in Zurich, 1,200 delegates from more than 170 countries participated. The Pittsburgh summit will take place Thursday, October 18 through Sunday, October 21, 2012.

The youth reporters' project is a collaboration between Carlow's Youth Media Advocacy Project (YMAP), the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, the Saturday Light Brigade Radio Productions, Inc., The Consortium for Public Education, WQED, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, and PCTV. Its mission was to develop a first-ever high school youth reporter program to cover the 2012 One Young World Summit.

"As a a coalition of organizations that values youth engagement, we wanted to ensure that the voice of the next generation is heard," said Jennifer Snyder-Duch, PhD, associate professor of communication at Carlow University, and one of the co-facilitators of YMAP. "Therefore, we developed the Youth Reporters program where 40 Pittsburgh area high school students will be trained and given media credentials to report on the summit."

The response to the call for 40 youth reporters was enthusiastic.

"We attracted 90 applicants, and 40 were selected and invited to participate," said James Kelly, PhD, associate professor of social work at Carlow, the other co-facilitator of YMAP. "This is a very exciting project, and we're glad that YMAP/Carlow is a central part of it."
