Carlow University Softball Wins NAIA's AMC Conference Championship

Defeats Point Park University Twice, 10-2 and 10-9 in 10 Innings, to Win Championship

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Carlow University women's softball team defeated Point Park University in both games on Sunday at Lind Field in Kennedy Township, Pa., to win the American Mideast Conference (AMC) championship, which is in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Carlow won the first game Sunday, which was game two of the championship series, 10-2, behind the pitching of Beaver Falls' Emily Pritts, a first year student-athlete from Riverside High School. Carlow spotted Point Park their two runs, then scored ten unanswered runs to secure the victory. The batting stars included Pritts, who had two hits and drove in two runs; shortstop Shelby Rogers, a junior from New Castle, Pa, who collected three hits and an RBI, and Ambridge's Rachel Blonski, who had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.

The second game, which was the championship game in the double elimination tournament, began with a five run outburst by Carlow in the top of the first, the highlight being catcher Sarah Sevcik's grand slam home run. Sevcik is a senior from Penn Hills, Pa. Point Park battled back from the early deficit and the game was tied at the end of regulation. Both teams scored twice in the seventh inning to keep the game knotted at eight, but Carlow pushed across two runs in the tenth then held off a Point Park rally in the bottom of the inning to win the game and championship, 10-9.

Melissa Costantini, a junior from Steubenville, Ohio, pitched six innings in relief in the second game, allowing one earned run, to get the win. Pritts earned a save by pitching the tenth inning.

Point Park had beaten Carlow all five times the teams had faced each other before Sunday - four times in regular season contests and the first game of the championship series, which was a hard-fought 7-3 victory played on Friday.

By winning the AMC championship, Carlow has qualified for the play-in games to the NAIA's National Tournament. Carlow will play Talladega College in the first round on May 4 and 5, in Troutville, Va. The NAIA's national tournament will be held May 17-23 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
