| Rose Marie Beard Woman of Spirit® Honors Scholarship Celebrates Tenth Anniversary on Friday, April 20 |

Scholarship Established in Mother's Memory Has Helped 44 Carlow University Students With Education, Opportunities to Study Abroad
Pittsburgh, Pa. - The tenth anniversary of the Rose Marie Beard Woman of Spirit® Honors Scholarship will be celebrated with a dinner on Friday, April 20, 2012, in the atrium of the A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology, located at the corner of Fifth and Craft avenues on the Carlow University campus.
Eugene Beard established the scholarship in memory of his mother, Rose Marie, who always encouraged her family to further their education, even though she never had the opportunity to go to college. At 16, an age when most students today begin to explore college options, Rose Marie found herself caring for her six younger siblings at their North Side neighborhood home after the death of both her parents. Despite this enormous responsibility, Rose Marie remained optimistic, committed to family, and dedicated to making life better for others. Those are the qualities she passed on to her son, Eugene, and the reasons why he sought to create a scholarship in his mothers name.
"Mom gave us all a touch of her elegance," Eugene wrote as a reflection in a book created to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the scholarship. "She was low profile but her presence was always felt and her extreme fairness and caring for everyone was so special. Perhaps, most of all, she never forgot her roots and reminded me often not to forget mine."
Carlow University has designed the Rose Marie Beard Honors Scholars program for young women who want to achieve their individual potential as competent and compassionate leaders. The successful candidates demonstrate high academic achievement and leadership, and, in both their personal and professional lives, reflect the strong work ethic, indomitable spirit, and compassionate leadership of Rose Marie Beard.
Since the program began in 2002, 44 students have been identified as Rose Marie Beard Honors Scholars, and have been provided with an academic scholarship for the scholar's first year and an award for a study abroad opportunity. Carlow students have studied in Australia, Belgium, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and Tanzania.
"My experiences with volunteerism and service in Tanzania and Kenya have expanded my global view, increased the value that I place on global service, and added a certain level of confidence to my personality that I lacked before," wrote Michelle Leibach, a Carlow nursing major who will graduate in May. "As I prepare for graduation, I cannot express my gratitude for what Mr. Beard and this scholarship fund have invested in me, and I am excited to explore the ways in which I can begin to give back to the community as a young professional."
