Laura Ellsworth to Speak at Carlow University Commencement on May 12
 
Jones Days Partner-in-Charge Will Address Graduates, Receive Honorary Degree

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Laura Ellsworth, partner-in-charge of the Pittsburgh office of the international law firm, Jones Day, will be the commencement speaker at Carlow University's Spring Commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. Ellsworth will receive an honorary degree presented by Dr. Mary Hines, president of Carlow University.

Ellsworth, who earned her bachelor's degree from Princeton University and her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh, practices a wide range of complex commercial litigation, including toxic torts, product liability, insurance, communications, intellectual property, employment, and ERISA. She is listed in both The Best Lawyers in America and in Chambers for commercial litigation. The Legal Intelligencer recognized her as a "leader in the law," and both Pennsylvania Law Weekly and Martindale-Hubbell listed her as one of the top female litigators in the state. She has been listed as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer in each of the past five years. [A complete biography follows this release.]

Biography for Laura Ellsworth

Laura Ellsworth is Partner-in-Charge of the Pittsburgh Office of Jones Day. She practices a wide range of complex commercial litigation, including toxic torts, product liability, insurance, communications, intellectual property, employment, and ERISA. She has been involved in a number of multijurisdictional product liability and bankruptcy matters, several of which have resulted in significant appellate rulings on novel issues such as market share liability and public nuisance. Her work includes coordinating and litigating nationwide matters for various clients, and she has appeared in numerous federal and state courts throughout the United States. She was lead lawyer in the landmark public nuisance case in which the Rhode Island Supreme Court rejected an attorney general's attempt to apply public nuisance law to the manufacture and sale of products.

She is listed in both The Best Lawyers in America and in Chambers for commercial litigation and has been recognized by the Legal Intelligencer as a "leader in the law;" by Pennsylvania Law Weekly as one of the top female litigators in Pennsylvania; and by Martindale-Hubbell as one of the "preeminent female litigators" in the state. She has been listed as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer for each of the past five years.

In 2003, Ellsworth was appointed by the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania to serve on the court's Advisory Committee for the Study of Rules and Practice.

In 2011 she was appointed by Senator Pat Toomey as co-chair of the Federal Judicial Selection Commission for the Western District of Pennsylvania. She also was appointed by the Third Circuit in 2011 to serve as a member of the judicial selection committee for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Ellsworth was named by Governor Edward Rendell as one of Pennsylvania's "Best 50 Women in Business" for 2008. She served as Co-Chair of the Inauguration of Governor Tom Corbett in 2011.

She has been appointed chair of The Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania LLC and serves on the Executive Committee of the Allegheny Conference on Community and Economic Development.

Ellsworth has written and lectured nationwide on various topics arising from her general areas of practice, including expert witnesses, privilege, e-discovery, electronic evidence, and trial tactics. She is coauthor of the "Multidistrict Litigation" chapter of the multivolume treatise Business Practice in Federal Courts (West 1998).

Ellsworth has been involved extensively in electronic discovery and has served as a managing editor of The Sedona Principles: Best Practices Recommendations and Principles for Addressing Electronic Document Production. She also was a contributing editor for Scheindlin & Capra's casebook on electronic discovery and the DRI's deskbook on e-discovery. In 2011 she was a Co-Chair of the DESI-IV working group on ediscovery standard-setting at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law. She currently serves on the Firm's e-Discovery Committee and has participated actively in both federal and state rulemaking in the area. She has lectured and written nationally in the field.

Ellsworth has served as an instructor in litigation-related programs sponsored by the PBA, PLI, BNA, ABA, Mealey's, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

She has served as chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Civil Litigation Section and as a member of the PBA Board. She received a 2002 PBA President's Award for her work on a task force addressing modifications to The Rules of Civil Procedure; a 2000 award for her work co-chairing the PBA Civil Justice Coalition Task Force, which studied and issued recommendations concerning tort reform legislation; and a 2010 award for her work co-chairing the Student Loan Forgiveness Task Force. She has chaired the PBA's Rules of Evidence Committee and was instrumental in efforts to promulgate Rules of Evidence for Pennsylvania.

In addition, she has been involved in a range of community and civic activities, including the development of inner-city education projects for high school students, consumer counseling for the elderly, and service on the boards of Neighborhood Legal Services, the Pittsburgh Public Theater, Imani Christian Academy, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Magee Women's Research Institute and Foundation, the Board of Visitors for the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, and the McCune Foundation. In 2010 she chaired the Go Red For Women campaign for the American Heart Association and in 2011 she was appointed chair of the United Way's Womens Leadership Council. In 2011, she was appointed by Governor Tom Corbett to the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation. She also serves as Chair of the Youth Policy Council of the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board; Chair of the Pennsylvania Economy League of Greater Pittsburgh; and Vice-Chair of the Allegheny Conference on Economic Development.
