Award-Winning Poet Judith Vollmer to Give Reading at Carlow University

Local Poet's Reading Part of Madwomen Reading Series

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Carlow University's Madwomen Reading Series will continue with a poetry reading by Judith Vollmer on Friday, March 30, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Theatre, located on the fifth floor of Grace Library on the Carlow campus. The reading is free and open to the public.

Vollmer, a resident of Regent Square, will read an excerpt from her fourth and most recent poetry collection The Water Books, published in 2012 by Autumn House Press. Literary and poetry critics have praised The Water Books for its range in content and form as well as Vollmer's engaging style. Poet-critic David Wojahn calls Vollmer "a poet of dizzying tonal and stylistic range" and claims that "The Water Books is her best collection thus far."

Vollmer has received several prestigious awards for her past works, including the Brittingham Prize for Level Green (1990), the Center for Book Arts chapbook prize for Black Butterfly (1997), and the Cleveland State Poetry Prize for The Door Open to the Fire (1997). Her third collection, Reactor, was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2004.

Vollmer teaches English at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg as well as in Drew University's MFA program in poetry and poetry-in-translation. She also co-founded the literary journal 5AM in 1984 with Ed Ochester.

The reading is sponsored by The Madwomen in the Attic, Carlow University's Division of Humanities, Creative Writing Program, and Women's Studies Program, the University of Pittsburgh Writing Program, and Autumn House Press. The book table will open at 7 p.m. and a reception and book signing will follow the reading.
