Carlow University Students Will Take an Alternative Spring Break

Nearly 30 students Traveling to Texas, Virginia, and D.C. March 4-10, 2012

Pittsburgh, Pa. - For most college students, spring break means a week at the beach with friends, but for nearly 30 Carlow University students, faculty, and staff it means a week of hard work building houses, rebuilding trails, preserving nature, and working with disabled youth in three different locations.

"The goal is to empower leadership development, compassionate and merciful responses based on awareness of social needs, issues, and possibilities for utilizing scholarship and personal interest to influence positive transformations in society," said Jermaine McKinley, coordinator of the Mercy Center for Service. Before leaving for the trip students are given the chance to learn and reflect on underlying issues that are associated with their service. "When this is all over I want the students to actually understand the issues behind the service and be able to articulate them."

Carlow will have three groups of approximately 10 students traveling to three different sites. One group will be traveling back to Laredo, TX where they served two years ago with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for local residents. Another group will be working at Douthat State Park in Millboro, VA rebuilding trails and preserving nature. The third group will be going to Clifton, VA to work at the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program for three days before traveling to Washington D.C. to work with Habitat for Humanity renovating and revitalizing urban housing.

Since 1992, Carlow University has participated in 18 ASB trips. Last year, 12 students went to Battle Creek, MI while another 30 students traveled to Immokalee, FL. In years past, Carlow groups have volunteered in Texas, the Ninth Ward of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, as well as Arizona, Kentucky, St. Thomas, and Jamaica
