More than 600 from the Carlow Community to participate in Mercy Service Day
Pittsburgh, Pa. - There will be more than 600 participants taking a break from their classes or daily activities to offer service to local organizations and agencies during Mercy Service Day on Wednesday, September 22, 2010. More than 180 first year collegiate level students and more than 200 students from The Campus School of Carlow University will be joined by faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and others.
Volunteers of all ages from the Carlow campus will help out with many different projects which include: urban gardening, beautification projects, administrative support, and visiting with children and seniors. One group will be painting a mural in the Oakland community. Others will be weeding, mulching, and rotating compost at three different community gardens to help give people in the Pittsburgh area a beautiful garden and bountiful harvest.
"Carlow University has been doing service for over 80 years," says Jermaine McKinley, coordinator of the Mercy Center for Service at Carlow University. "Students will be giving their time to local service agencies that are in need of helping hands." Mercy Service Day will first start with a hot breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in St. Agnes Center at Carlow University. The students then will be broken up into their service groups and begin travel to do their service by 9:30 a.m. The students will work on-site at various locations throughout the community until around 2 p.m. and lunch will be provided for these students while at their locations.
The Carlow Campus School children will be participating in a walk-a-thon to raise money for charities. The middle school age children will walk in the morning and the upper children will walk in the afternoon. The younger students of the Campus School will be making cards to send to seniors or our troops overseas. There are also, a number of student athletes participating in Mercy Service day; one team scheduled to do street cleaning in the Oakland areas is comprised of all athletes.
Mercy Service Day helps incorporate the goals and values of the Sisters of Mercy into Carlow's curriculum and provide a day of service to our community. Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy said, "Small acts of service and virtue are daily within our reach."
