"In Sisterhood" Multimedia Exhibit Opens at Carlow University October 13-23

Oral Histories of the Early Days of the Women's Movement in Pittsburgh Featured

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The multimedia exhibit "In Sisterhood: The Women's Movement in Pittsburgh" will be installed at Carlow University in Oakland from Tuesday, October 13 through Friday, October 23, 2009. The exhibit will be on display in the Frances Warde Hall Gallery while it is at Carlow.

"In Sisterhood" is an oral history project highlighting influential feminists by recording their histories on digital video, creating a multimedia exhibit that includes a portrait gallery and videos using their interview footage. The project was selected by the Community Connections Initiative as one of 12 regional projects to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Pittsburgh. The exhibit is a tribute to women like Ann Begler, Alma Speed Fox, Eleanor Smeal, Barbara Hafer, and a dozen other leading feminists, who inspired civic action and fostered regional pride for future generations.

"This exhibit serves as an inspiration for the current generation of young activists and will inspire anyone committed to social change and justice locally, nationally, and globally," says Katie Hogan, PhD, director of Women's Studies and professor of English at Carlow University.

The public is invited to the opening reception at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, in the Frances Warde Hall Gallery, and also welcome to attend a panel discussion about the history of the women's movement on Wednesday, October 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Docent led tours will follow the panel discussion. Self-guided tours of the exhibit can be made by appointment at other times. To arrange a self-guided tour, please call Dr. Sylvia Rhor (412) 578-6208.

The exhibit is sponsored jointly by Carlow University's Women's Studies Program, the Art Department, the Communication Department, and the Grace Ann Geibel Institute for Justice and Social Responsibility.
