| Carlow University Clashes with Morton's over Trademark Use |
| |
Women of Spirit® Trademark Used in Unauthorized Manner for June 27 Dinner
Pittsburgh, Pa. - It has come to the attention of Carlow University that Morton's The Steakhouse has planned and announced an event titled "Women of Spirit" to benefit the American Red Cross and honor a woman for "exceptional commitment to volunteerism and service." This event is being held in 37 cities around the country. The title of this event, and the promotion of this event using this name, has not been approved by Carlow University, the trademark owner.
Since 1998, Carlow University has held the exclusive trademark rights to both "Women of Spirit"® and "Woman of Spirit."® "Women of Spirit"® is an international program which has honored 127 exemplary women who have excelled in local, national, and international arenas. Between 1993 and 2005, Carlow University has honored these women at special award banquets. In fact, in 2005, Queen Noor of Jordan was presented with Carlow's International Women of Spirit® award. Carlow has also used the Women of Spirit® name as an integral part of raising scholarship funds for students in need - many of whom are the first generation in their families to attend college. Additionally, since 2004, the University has continued to promote the name "Women of Spirit"® through the Women of Spirit Institute, which sponsors educational programs for high school and college-age young women, among other key educational and community initiatives.
Carlow has made every effort to resolve the unauthorized use of its trademark privately. It is unfortunate that a trademark which stands for the highest levels of academic and professional accomplishment of women is being exploited by an organization with no ties to Carlow and in a manner that promotes alcohol consumption.
Carlow University is committed to protecting its trademark and will continue in its efforts to resolve this situation in a manner that honors its 127 Women of Spirit®, as well as future generations of Carlow Women of Spirit®.
